There is a very high chance that most of the watches that you buy will show you accurate time. Because, well that’s the main purpose of a watch. But there are only a select few watches, in a select few categories that fall into the “true” luxury watches. These luxury watches are made with several goals in mind so that it withstands the test of time when it comes to: style and craftsmanship. That’s the reason why you’ll notice that most luxury watches, Swiss luxury watches to be precise, have been around for over a century (100 years).
There are tons of luxury watches that can cost from $1000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars. But you should start with $10,000. That’s the budget that I had and it gave me a couple of exceptional options to choose from that made me feel like a million bucks when I wore the watch. Many of these luxury watches include a gold case, a diamond encrusted bezel, or just plain old stainless steel but produced with exceptional craftsmanship that you cannot find in any other watch in the world. In this instance, I’m talking about the Rolex submariner 116610 Date Watch It has an Oyster Glidelock bracelet and a scratch proof Cerachom bezel that you rarely find in watches that are below $5,000.
Anyway, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of this and see what you need to know to make an educated decision when buying a Swiss luxury watch.
- Choose Your Style
Every person has a unique style and a different choice when it comes almost anything that’s related to fashion. So, before you hop into the shop, make sure that you know what style you like and what purpose you will be wearing this watch for?
Do you want a gem encrusted timepiece that will be worn only on special occasions? Like getting a new job, or retirement.
Or do you want a chronograph look that represents your professionalism and your status in the corporate world, or just in the world in general?
There are many different things that you can consider along with those things, like how often you will be wearing the watch. Where you will be wearing this watch to, what do you do, etc.
Generally speaking, a sleek chronograph look goes with almost any occasion and any event that you will attend throughout your life. So if you are getting confused with all this, you can just go for that look and buy your dream watch.
- What’s the Price?
This is an important thing, unless you are a multi-billionaire. As I said in the beginning, luxury watches can start from a $1,000 and can easily go up to hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on what you’re looking for. Generally speaking, if you want a good variety of options, you should expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 for your first luxury watch. I would suggest researching about the watch on the internet before you hop into the showroom to buy the watch. This will save you a lot of time and frustration when you are actually making the decision.
As someone who sells Swiss luxury watches for a living, I see a common problem with people when it comes to making the decision. Especially Americans. No offense, but Americans love to live above their means. And when it comes to timepieces, they definitely love to buy something that they cannot afford. This puts them into financial debt. If not, they go for a steal, and not for a deal. Remember, when you are shopping for a luxury watch, it is better to pay more and have an original watch, aka, going for a deal. Rather than having a counterfeit watch at a price that feels like a steal. That’s the reason why the counterfeit industry exists. Even if you purchase a Rolex Yachtmaster for $5,000, there is a 97% chance that it would be a counterfeit because it just doesn’t retail for that much. Even 2nd hand Yachtmaster’s don’t resell for that low price.
That brings me to my point: you should almost always be looking to pay within the retail price range. You definitely have a wiggle room for a couple hundred dollars, no doubt. But you should never be looking for something that retails for $30,000 and getting it for $5,000. That just never happens in the real world.
It is okay if you cannot afford a certain watch at this point in time. You can still come back when you can afford it without digging a blackhole in your pocket.
Everyone wants a bargain, but very few people know what they should be paying for it. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow right now, but that’s the truth. I could sugar coat things for you but that would just mean giving you a trophy for buying a counterfeit watch. I want you to buy an original one and not feel like you were scammed.
On to my next point.
- What Materials Does it Have?
Obviously these luxury watches use some of the finest materials in the world. I mean that’s the reason why they are so expensive. Most luxury watches use 14kt or 18kt yellow gold on the case or the band. There are some timepieces that use white gold and rose gold plating. The most expensive watches use platinum metal.
If you’re looking for a watch that you can wear for almost any occasion, there are leather straps for you. These can be worn casually and for special occasions too. But if you want something more flashy, you can go for the gold bracelet that will give you more of a cha-ching look. Obviously the gold band will be more expensive than the leather one.
Lastly, many ultra-expensive luxury watches include gemstones combined with some high-end luxury watch designs. If you are shopping for this type of watch, you want to make sure that the gemstones are real because they will add to the overall value of the watch.
At the end of the day, it all depends on which watch makes you happy. Maybe you had a goal to buy a certain watch when you were a child, or maybe you just want to add another watch to your collection. You want to make sure that you make the right choice because let’s be honest, no one likes losing money, or feeling like they made the wrong choice.
I hope this guide has guided you in the right direction and helped you make the right choice.
